Earthquake Preparedness in the Philippines: Staying Calm When the Ground Shakes
When the ground moves beneath us, staying calm becomes our strongest foundation. The Philippines is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes are a natural part of life. While we can’t predict them, we can prepare and respond with calmness and care.
Before an Earthquake
Preparation helps prevent panic.
- Secure shelves, mirrors, and hanging items.
- Identify safe spots, such as sturdy tables or corners away from windows.
- Keep a Go-Bag ready with essentials: water, flashlight, first aid kit, extra masks, cash, and snacks.
- Join community drills and assess your home’s safety using PHIVOLCS’ self-assessment tool:

During an Earthquake
Stay steady and protect yourself.
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On — stay in place until the shaking stops.
- Move away from windows, glass, and tall furniture.
- If you are outdoors, go to an open area away from buildings and power lines.
- If you are driving, pull over safely and avoid stopping under bridges or overpasses.
After the Shaking Stops
Safety does not end when the shaking does.
- Expect aftershocks; stay alert and calm.
- Check for injuries and hazards (such as gas leaks or broken wires).
- Do not re-enter damaged buildings.
- Stay updated through official channels only.
